Line Dance Tips to Get You Started

By Treva Bedinghaus, About.com

The popularity of line dance is growing, with its realxed country and western music and casual atmosphere. Dancers lacking the confidence to grab a partner for a waltz or two-step are running to dance floors at the first note of a line dance. You can formally learn country line dances at local dance studios, but many people get started in local country bars and nightclubs. Following are a few tips to get you started line dancing.

  • Be comfortable. Wear something casual, such as jeans, that allows you to move freely and stay comfortable. Don't forget about your feet. Wear a pair of comfy, flat, closed-toed shoes. If you have cowboy boots, wear them...they'll help get you into the "feel" of the atmosphere.
  • Stand in the middle. As a new line dancer, avoid standing in the back, even though you think that's the best place to be. Because line dancing involves lots of turns, you could at some point find yourself in the front of the entire group! Stand somewhere in the middle, the safest place for beginners.
  • Start with feet together. Always start with your feet together facing the same way as everyone else. Figure out the step you are going to do first and have your weight on the correct foot.
  • Tuck your thumbs. Stick your thumbs inside the top of the waist band or belt loops of your jeans or skirt. Don't put your hands on your hips, behind your back or down by your sides, as your arms will be in the way.
  • Know a few steps. If you know a few basic line dance steps, you'll be able to get through most of the popular dances. Familiarize yourself with a few of the basics: grapevine, step-tap, scuff and stomp.
