For a very simple but sufficient dance costume, you really only need three basic pieces: a long skirt, a leotard or tight-fitting tank top and a hip scarf.
For the skirt, almost any type will work for your dance costume. Some people feel that longer, flowing skirts make them feel more like dancing. If you haven't worn the skirt lately, consider cutting a few slits from the bottom seam to the mid-thigh area. You'll want to be able to move your legs freely, and feeling a little sexier can't hurt either.
If you have a leotard that fits, almost any color and style will work perfectly for your dance costume. If you don't have a leotard, opt for a snug tank top or camisole. Your goal here is to enable upper body movements to be clearly visible, especially if you are a true beginner. Learning how to roll the stomach, for example, often takes a lot of practice in front of a mirror.
Finally, a hip scarf will complete the belly dance costume. A hip scarf is simply a scarf or long piece of material tied at the hips. If you don't have a long scarf, search for pieces of scrap material or even an old sheet to cut into long strips. Be creative!
This basic dance costume is all you really need to learn the basic moves of belly dancing. In time you'll want to venture out and wear more exotic pieces, but true beginners need nothing more than the simple basics.
