Veils are used as props while belly dancing and add grace and interest to routines. Veils can be either rectangular or circular. The following instructions describe how to make a simple rectangular veil.

Here's How:
- Choose a fabric. Any light, sheer fabric will be fine, including chiffon, organza or silk. Purchase at least 3 yards of the fabric.
- Measure. A basic rectangular veil should be twice the length of your arm. Hold your arms straight out to the sides. With a tape measure, note the length from the fingertips on your left hand to the fingertips on your right hand. To this number, add 2 feet. This will be the length of your veil.
- Cut the Fabric. Depending on your measurement from Step 2, cut your fabric to the desired length. Be careful not to cut too much, as you will need a little extra material to sew a simple hem in the next step.
- Hem the veil. Now that you have your material cut to the correct length for your veil, hem the material on all four sides, using a narrow hem that is a quarter-inch (.25) wide.
- Add trim. Adding trim to your veil serves two purposes: it adds a touch of style and sparkle, and it makes it the right weight to flow properly while you are dancing. Choose a trim you like, such as single-strand sequin, but make sure it is neither too light nor too heavy for your fabric. The trim should add just enough weight to allow the veil to flow smoothly with your body. If the trim is too light, the veil will be limp. If it is too heavy, the veil will droop as you try to move it.
Tips:
- Choose silk if you can afford it - it tends to flow better than other fabrics and looks exquisite.
- Choose a trim in the same color as the fabric.
