How soon should you start planning your wedding dance?

By Treva Bedinghaus, About.com

Question: How soon should you start planning your wedding dance?

We have a year before our wedding date. How far in advance should we start planning our wedding dance for the reception?

Answer: Your wedding dance should be a part of your wedding plans from the very start. Waiting until the last minute to learn your wedding dance may cause extra stress and frustration that you really won't have the time or energy to deal with.

Wedding dance choreographers recommend starting early, as much as six to twelve months before the big day. Taking your time learning how to dance together will be much more fun and much less stressful. Begin by taking a few group classes. Start with the basic partner dances just to get a feel for moving together on a dance floor. Take several opportunities to dance together as a couple, whether at clubs or ballrooms, even in your own living room. Consider enrolling in private lessons about two or three months before your wedding. At your private lessons, you will focus on picking a song and choreographing your special dance. You will then have a few weeks before your wedding to practice and perfect your first dance together.
