What is Riverdance?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What is Riverdance?
Answer: Riverdance is a theatrical show consisting of traditional Irish step dancing. Riverdance consists of a group of talented dancers that perform with rapid leg movements while keeping their bodies and arms mostly still.

First performed in 1994, the premiere performance of Riverdance featured Irish Dancing Champion Jean Butler, Michael Flatley, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Celtic choral group Anúna with a score written by Bill Whelan.

After performing in many cities throughout Europe, Riverdance appeared at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in 1996, marking the first performance in America. In 2000, Riverdance appeared for a year on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre, featuring Pat Roddy and Eileen Martin as lead dancers. Riverdance continues to be performed all over the world, but is currently playing its farewell tour. The show will finish in 2010, 15 years after opening at The Point Theatre in Dublin.
