Contra dances are generally targeted for dancers about 10 years old and older. Some younger children do very well, but the maturity level of the child must be taken into consideration. Contra dancing can become quite fast-paced and aerobically challenging at times. Some parents prefer to let their younger children watch from the sidelines until they are old enough (and physically big enough) to be able to keep up with the rapid pace. Most contra dances are designed, however, for participation by the whole family. In addition to dancing, other activities may be planned for the evening, such as games and singing for younger attendees.
