The Bottom Line

For dance movie lovers, Step Up is a must-see. Even though the movie's storyline is weak and quite predictable, the dance scenes more than make up for it. The lead actors may lack credibility, but the movie's energy leaves you dancing in the aisles.

Pros

  • Strong dance performances
  • Great choreography sequences
  • Nice mix of hip-hop and contemporary dancing

Cons

  • Weak, predictable storyline

Description

  • Released in 2006, directed by Anne Fletcher (The 40 Year-Old Virgin and The Longest Yard)
  • Rating: PG-13, Starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan.
  • A fun, fast-paced dance flick with predictable plots but exciting, energetic dance scenes.

Guide Review - Movie Review - "Step Up"

If you're a dancer looking for a movie with great dancing, Step Up will certainly satisfy. However, if you're hoping for a flick with an interesting storyline and believable characters, Step Up doesn't quite deliver.

Step Up under the direction and choreography of Anne Fletcher, pleases viewers with its leading stars: Channing Tatum as bad-boy Tyler and Jenna Dewan as Nora, a spoiled ballet dancer looking for a chance to dance. The two, predictably, find each other as dance partners. Young viewers will appreciate the steamy dance scenes, as well as the steamy young actors.

The romance factor of this movie will delight young viewers, as most movies of this genre seem to do. Even though most will agree that the boring dialogue and one-dimensional characters of Step Up are less than desirable, the movie possesses a certain enthusiasm that leaves us wanting for more.
