The Bottom Line

"Baby Ballet" is a very basic introduction to ballet geared toward the young, beginning ballerina. For parents wishing to introduce their little girl to the basic steps of ballet, this DVD is similar to actually attending a ballet class. However, the steps and concepts introduced are much too complicated for babies.
Pros
  • A basic introduction to ballet dancing.
Cons
  • The DVD is geared toward older preschoolers, not necessarily babies.

Description

  • Well-organized, basic introduction to ballet.
  • Beginning ballet steps are demonstated by a ballet instructor, then performed by a group of young ballerinas.
  • Closely follows the format of a formal ballet class.

Guide Review - DVD Review - Baby Ballet

Although the title of this instructional DVD is quite cute and catchy, it is somewhat misleading. Designed for little girls between the ages of 4 and 6, "Baby Ballet" is definitely not suitable for babies. Parents who purchase this DVD hoping to teach their baby how to dance will be disappointed. However, budding preschool ballerinas will be delighted to be attending their very own special ballet class in their own living room.

The ballet instructor, Miss Rosemary, describes and demonstrates several beginning ballet steps to a class of young ballerinas. She then leads her class, a small group of young dancers, through each step. The video is appropriately divided into short segments, totaling about 30 minutes. The format follows the format of a true ballet class, beginning with a barre warm-up, followed by stretches, center practice and a series of combinations across the floor.
