What is a waltz?

By

Question: What is a waltz?
Answer: The waltz is a romantic dance performed in triple (3/4) time usually in the basic closed position. It is a graceful and elegant dance characterized by long, flowing movements and continuous turns. Waltz couples appear to glide effortlessly around the dance floor.

The waltz is often danced to orchestrated music with strong melodic instruments and can be either vocal or instrumental in nature. The first beat of each measure is dominant with a strong accent on the downbeat, with the next two beats being much lighter. The waltz was first developed in Vienna as a fast-paced dance to music of the time. The Waltz came into the United States in the mid-1800s, first appearing as a vigorous, demanding dance. Eventually, it evolved into the slower version we know today.
