Question: What are Lines of Dance?
Answer: Lined of Dance (LOD) are imaginary lines that represent the counter-clockwise flow of traffic around a dance floor. They are followed by couples in order to help avoid collisions with other couples. Lines of Dance consist of a series of several ovals (or circles.) The fastest moving traffic moves on the outside of the dance floor, with each inner circle of the Line of Dance moving a little slower. Before stopping or changing direction, couples should make their way to the center of the dance floor.

Line of Dances are useful for instructors when describing the directions of dance steps to be taken by dance students. Although all dancers should respect lines of dance, not all movements will travel exactly along the paths. Movements may take dancers across the Lines of Dance, in and out of them, or even against them for short periods of time. Overall movement, however, should progress in the direction of Lines of Dance.
