Promenade Position

In one of the most basic ballroom dance positions, the promenade, both partners face the same direction instead of facing each other. Practice the promenade with your partner until it becomes natural. You should be able to hit the position quickly if your instructor tells you to "begin in promenade."

  • Begin in the closed position.
  • Turn toward your clasped hands so a V-shape is achieved.
  • The man should place his right hand on the lady's back.
  • The lady's left hand should rest on the man's back.
  • Partners should turn their feet slightly in the direction of travel.
  • Both the man and the lady should look toward their joined hands.
