What is contra dance?

By Treva Bedinghaus, About.com

Question: What is contra dance?

I've heard that contra dance is lots of fun. What is contra dance?

Answer: Contra dance is a form of folk dancing in which couples dance in two lines, facing each other. At a contra dance, a "caller" guides new and experienced dancers through a series of dances. Contra dancers perform a sequence of figures while progressing up and down the line, repeating the sequences with other partners. The contra sequences are much like those of square dancing. During a contra dance session, every couple will dance with every other couple. Live music usually accompanies the contra dancing, often led by a fiddle.

Contra is a very casual type of social dance. No special costumes are required, but comfortable shoes are encouraged. Contra dance will provide a great aerobic workout. Various types of contra exist, such as "family" and "taditional" dances. Family contra dances are very much family-oriented events, with lots of young kids and simplified dances. Traditional contras feature more of the older dances and tend to be a little less aerobic than the modern contra dances.

Contra is fun and easy to learn. Even if you have never danced before, contra dance will probably come easy. It's easy for beginners to follow along because the caller guides everyone through together. People of all ages are encouraged to attend contra dances, as they provide a safe, family-friendly experience.
