Animated Versions of The Nutcracker Story

By , About.com Guide

If your children can't get enough of The Nutcracker Ballet each year, rent a couple of the following films, all based on the original story. Although an animated version of the ballet does not exist, several animated versions of the Nutcracker story have been produced.

  • Fantasia:

Although it's not a complete retelling of the Nutcracker, a few musical pieces from the Nutcracker Suite can be heard in the 1940 Disney animation film Fantasia. With the Nutcracker nowhere to be found, the beautiful music is accompanied by dancing fairies, mushrooms and fish. The music used in the film is a slightly altered version of the Nutcracker Suite.

  • Nutcracker Fantasy:

Featuring the voices of Christopher Lee as Drosselmeyer and Melissa Gilbert as Clara, this 1979 stop-motion version of the Nutcracker story employs a few selections from the Nutcracker Suite.

  • Care Bears Nutcracker Suite:

Premiering on the Disney Channel in 1988, this animated television special is based (rather loosely) on the original ballet.

  • The Nutcracker Prince:

Starring the voices of Kiefer Sutherland and Megan Follows, this 1990 full-length cartoon features music from the Nutcracker Suite.

  • The Nuttiest Nutcracker:

Some music from the Nutcracker Suite was used in this 1999 comedy version of the Nutcracker story, featuring the voice of Phyllis Diller as an obese Sugar Plum Fairy. It was the first computer-animated film to be released direct to video.

  • Barbie in the Nutcracker:

Released in 2001, this direct-to-video version of the story stars the ever popular Barbie doll, with a significantly altered storyline.
