Barre exercises are meant to prepare your body for center work, which is comprised of combinations performed in the center of the room. Every step will be more challenging without a barre to hold on to. Use your time at the barre to help find your balance. The barre is meant to be held lightly. Never lean on the barre to support your body weight, as doing so will make your work in the center almost impossible.

During barre, make it a point to lift your hand off the barre every so often to see if you could balance without it. You will know right away if your weight is balanced or not. Always try to rest your fingertips on the barre lightly.
