The Wedding Dance

Your First DanceTogether

By Treva Bedinghaus, About.com

If your wedding plans include a reception, don't forget to think about the wedding dance. Your first dance together as husband and wife should be truly magical. If you plan and practice early, you will both be confident and will greatly impress your friends and family. Who knew you two could dance, anyway?

Follow these tips to help ease your anxiety about that all-important first dance:

  • Take a few lessons.
If you have enough time, sign up for a few private lessons. Learning to dance will add elegance to your special day. Ballroom dancing has gained popularity over the years, so finding a dance class shouldn't be difficult.
  • Choose a song.
Most couples have a special song. If you don't have a song in mind, ask your dance teacher or reception DJ for suggestions. Try to limit the dance to about 2 minutes, as any longer will seem like an eternity. The song you choose will help determine the choreography of your dance.
  • Practice, practice, practice.
The more you are able to practice your dance, the more at ease you will be on the dance floor. Try to start lessons about 6 months in advance of your wedding day. This will allow plenty of time to learn the choreography and become confident in performing before a crowd.
