To make my shoes last longer I usually buy 2 or 3 pairs at a time (I get them from discount online shops, great deals!) and I rotate wearing them to each class. I always make sure to let them dry out before storing them back in my bag. I also switch between right and left every time I wear them too. This has been working well for me, I get a lot more life out of them because they end up being evenly worked out by wearing them on both feet and from the rest each pair gets too. Hope this helps!
I usually don’t break them in intially too much…because if you make them totally comfortable right off the bat, the go “dead” way too soon. Especially traditional paste shoes. Then I usually put some glue on the tips…Elmer’s glue works great! To keep the tips from fraying and to give a little more grip without rosin. Lately, I’ve started using Gaynor Mindens. They last for a really long time, but don’t use them until you are advanced on pointe and your feet are really strong. Work up your technique first. Hope this helps!
