Dance Poll: How Long Have You Been Dancing?

Friday March 28, 2008

If you are a dancer, chances are you know exactly how old you were when you started dancing. Whether you tip-toed into your first ballet class as a three-year-old or you started "fashionably late" in your twenties, your first memories of dancing stick with you forever.

So, how long have you been dancing?

I have been dancing over 15 1/2 years. I took my very first class when I was 44. I am still with the same instructor, we have become very close friends. I take 2 pointe and one slipper class a week. We perform the Nutcracker, and have a Spring recital every year. Another woman who is 10 years younger than I, started at the same time. We keep each other on our toes! I love dance. We are going to San Francisco this weekend to see a Balanchine ballet. We go with our spouses and dance class mates, every year. I wanted to take classes as a child, so now I am danceng with children, teens and young adults, it is the best. It would have been easier to start at 4 instead of 44. But, at this rate I won’t grow old!

Wow! I’m speechless…what an inspiration you are to all dancers. I think it is absolutely wonderful that you are enjoying ballet so much. You must be a strong dancer, to even be dancing on pointe! My daughter is 9, and looking forward to her first pair of pointe shoes. Please give us details of the Balanchine ballet…readers would love to read all about it!
Thanks, and keep dancing!

Thanks for your kind words. You’re never too old to pursue a passion. I also, work out, and take yoga, pilates, and cardio classes. Never too old to be fit, either.
The performance was an Intl salute to SF ballet. In 3 acts, all very modern, lyrical, & creative. The 3 company’s were, NYC Ballet, Natl Ballet of Canada, and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. The last one was the everyone’s fav, strong men in a pas de duex, they moved together without touching. This was one of the best performances we have seen in SF. You can read about it on the website: sfballet.org (program 6)
Thanks for your newsletter, and for this forum. Break a leg! Cindy
